About playgroup

Playgroups are for babies, toddlers and preschoolers and their parents or caregivers. They are low cost, run by the families attending and usually local. 54,000 children from 40,000 families go to playgroup in metropolitan and country Victoria each week.

Playgroup-aged children are going through a stage of rapid brain and skill development. Playgroup encourages that development because at playgroup, babies are offered play experiences to stimulate their senses, toddlers practise their developing physical, intellectual and language skills, and preschool children practise social skills – important preparation for kindergarten and school.

Playgroup can be a lifeline to parents with babies, todders and preschoolers who might not have any other opportunity to get to know local parents going through similar experiences.

About us

Playgroup Victoria has been helping families join, start and run playgroups in Victoria since 1974 over the telephone, through publications and multimedia and, where possible, in person. We have redesigned this website to make it even easier for families to go to playgroup and to get the information they need.

Families are referred to ISP by local service providers including community health, maternal and child health, refugee and women’s housing services.

ISP is delivered to families from a fully equipped van staffed by a playgroup coordinator, family support and peer support staff. Find out more

Latest news

Human swine flu
Victoria has moved to the protect phase of the national pandemic plan for human swin flu or H1N1 and is classified as moderate. Most cases are mild. Five percent of cases are severe and may require hospitalisation and intensive care.

The best defence against all influenza viruses (including H1N1) remains good general hygiene. Children and adults with flu-like symptoms should stay at home and limit close contact with others, espeically other children, and seek medical advice where necessary.
