Playgroup Victoria is an incorporated association committed to helping all Victorian families discover the benefits of playgroup and is a not for profit organisation funded by membership, fundraising and government grants. Playgroup Victoria is endorsed as a Tax Concession Charity (TCC) by the Australian Tax Office and has Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR) for all its activities. As an endorsed DGR, Playgroup Victoria is entitled to receive income tax deductible gifts and deductible contributions from individual donors, corporate and philanthropic trusts.
During the late 1960s and early '70s hundreds of playgroups scattered throughout Melbourne and country Victoria. There became a need for some cohesion and networking between these groups and parents wanting to start and join playgroups.
In response to this need a group of hard working volunteers came together and invited playgroups and interested people to ring in for advice and support on Monday mornings. The response was so great that in 1974, the Victorian Playgroup Association was formed. Its goals were to set up an advisory service, fulfill the need for workshops, lectures and discussions related to parenthood and life with children, and to liaise with local, state and federal governments.
Forty years on, Playgroup Victoria is still working to empower families to support each other and advance their child's development. Our hard working, dedicated team provide advice and support for Victorian families with membership services, playgroup consultants, training packages, programs, events and advocacy work with all levels of government.
For so many parents who are facing challenges in their life and need a little help in their parenting role, playgroup provides the support they need. Through the care and guidance of other families and/or a playgroup mentor, there is an opportunity to develop their individual strengths, increase their capacity as a parents and find their place in a connected, supportive community.
Our team sees the difference friendship can make in an isolated family's life and hear what parents say, day after day: "Going to playgroup kept me sane when my children were little. I relied on the friendship and support I got there." "I feel comfortable with the other women at playgroup. I can say anything to them and still feel I'm okay."
Playgroup Victoria is committed to supporting families through playgroups for another 40 years and beyond.
Staff manage Playgroup Victoria's day to day operations. Playgroup Victoria's board is responsible for governance and is elected at an AGM.
