Intergenerational playgroup project
Playgroup Victoria coordinated a 16-week intergenerational playgroup pilot project at Barwon Health's Percy Baxter Lodges in North Geelong from 2009-2010 to improve social inclusion with aged care residents and engage residents with local families by providing a positive environment in a community playgroup setting.
The project was done in partnership with the National Ageing Research Institute and Barwon Health and funded by the Victorian Department of Health's Aged Care branch under the 'Count us in! social inclusion for older people living at public sector aged care services'.
Two facilitators were engaged to support the playgroup: a lifestyle officer from the facility and a playgroup faciltator from the City of Greater Geelong. Twelve families and 15 residents were recruited to participate.
The National Ageing Research Institute researched the project before it began, as it progressed and at its end and published its findings in Evaluation of an Intergenerational Playgroup in a Residential Aged Care Facility in April 2010.
Playgroup Victoria drew on these findings and the experiences of Bellarine Treasures Playgroup to produce Starting Playgroups in Aged Care Facilities for families and aged care facilities considering beginning a playgroup.
